A Special Trip Home

When we started to think about this trip the question of the feasibility of such a journey came up immediatly.

• What is the distance we will have to do? According to the GPS the air line distance is just 10.000 km.
• How much time will we need? Are the six weeks yearly leave enough or do we have to plan for up to a year?
• How much will the journey cost? Is Africa a bargain or do we have to sell part of our belongings?

Even if a lot of people do such journeys it is quite difficult to find answers to these questions. The infinite number of web pages of such journeys are most times increasing the longing for foreign countries by showing exciting reports and impressive pictures, but besides the duration of the trip one can't find a lot more relevant information. For carful planners and for our own curiosity we want to prepare an over all balance of the trip. Sorted according to the different visited countries we want to fill this page with the most important numbers during and after our big trip.

These are the balances we found so far:

• 43.635 Rand (~4850 €) were spent by two Journalists of Getaway to drive a Landrover from Cape Town to Cairo
• 82.800 Rand can be spent to participate in an organised trip "all inclusive" driving within 36 days from Cape Town to Cairo. This is exclusive the vehicle you want to use to drive up and the experience one gains by planning and doing the trip on your own.

After our journey we know how much our dream was, how far our bikes carried us and whether the planned duration of 4 month was realistic.

That we spent more money than the GETAWAY team was surprising for a second. But we spent more time, drove a bigger distance and our balance includes the costs for the flights from Nairobi and Cairo to Zuerich. Explanations: - Not includet is the money we spent on the motorbikes and their preparation. - The costs for visa and boarders include the two Carnet de Passage and all the obligatory insurances. - Costs of accomodation were reasonable since we got many invitations by wonderful people . (Thank you so much Louis and family in Dar Es Salaam, Beate and Dirk in Addis Abeba und Mazen in Cairo!!!) - Communication includes internet, telephone and mail. - The money we spent on garages and extra tyres is summarized under motorbikes. - Other cost are the entrance fees, safaries and important (clothes, engine oil) and less important shopping. - The transport cost contain the flights and the expensive ferry from Aswan to Wadi Halfa.
